Whether it’s the hugely interesting working docks at Sharpness or the historic ports of Gloucester and Bristol with tales and relics aplenty that rock your boat, or the great Cathedrals of Bristol and Gloucester, there are lots of interesting and amazing places to visit either in or within easy reach of the Berkeley Vale. Downham Hill to the west of Uley is known by locals as Smallpox Hill harking back to the site of the first known isolation hospital in England. Berkeley Castle was the site of the foul murder of Edward II in 1327 and his tomb can be found in Gloucester Cathedral. Viking footsteps can be traced from Sharpness to Wanswell from where they were eventually driven back to the sea. Explore all this and more on your visit.

When completed in 1827 the Sharpness to Gloucester canal was the widest and deepest canal in the world. It’s now arguably the most beautiful. Or why not walk through Berkeley Deer Park in the footsteps of kings (The deer are still there for you to see). If you have a little time why not venture onto the Severn Way and appreciate the power, beauty and wildlife that comes with the river that boasts the second greatest tidal range on the planet and has become a mecca for adventurers on the crest of its impressive tidal wave. The Cotswold Way kisses the eastern edges of the Vale and that’s just for starters!

Our jewel in the crown is the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust established in 1946 by the late Peter Scott but there are many other wildlife gems around the unspoilt raised riverbed of the Berkeley Vale. Walk with the deer at the Berkeley Deer Park then pop along to the nearby exotic Butterfly House at Berkeley Castle. All this and more is waiting for you.
